Product Description

Industrial installation environments span a wider severity range than any other product category in Frigate’s portfolio. A standard factory floor PLC enclosure requires IP54, RAL powder coat, and DIN rail provisions. A chemical plant field enclosure requires 316L stainless steel, ISO 12944 CX corrosion-rated coating, IP66 sealing with chemical-resistant gasket material, and cable entries rated for the specific chemical atmosphere.  

A food and beverage washdown enclosure requires IP69K with crevice-free 316L stainless construction and a surface finish that withstands 80°C steam jet cleaning without delamination. Each environment drives a distinct specification, Frigate’s environment review at the enquiry stage confirms the correct combination before fabrication begins.

Ex d Flameproof Construction

Flame path gaps, thread engagement, and joint dimensions manufactured to certified drawing; verified by CMM at first article.

Surface Preparation

Sa 2.5 blast clean (ISO 8501-1) for C4/C5/CX coating systems; Sa 2.0 for C3; zinc phosphate for standard powder coat on CRCA steel

Back-Panel Thermal Interface

Machined flat back-panel seating surface (flatness ≤0.2 mm) for direct drive thermal contact;

Vibration Resistance

Structural review per IEC 60068-2-6; reinforced panel construction; captive M4 / M5 fasteners at all removable panels;

IK Impact Rating

Technical Advantages

VFD and servo drive enclosures introduce a thermal management requirement not present in most industrial enclosure types. High-power drives in sealed IP54+ enclosures generate heat loads that the enclosure body alone cannot dissipate. Frigate fabricates enclosures with integrated heatsink provisions, back-panel thermal interface surfaces, forced-air fan systems, and heat exchanger mounting provisions where the drive’s thermal model requires it.

These are fabricated into the enclosure structure at manufacture, not fitted as aftermarket additions. Where a sealed enclosure with internal climate control is required, Frigate fabricates the enclosure with the climate control unit mounting provisions, internal air circulation baffles, and condensate drainage provisions all integrated into the design.

We have a site with both chemical exposure and IP69K washdown requirements. Can one enclosure satisfy both?

Yes — 316L stainless with crevice-free construction and FKM/Viton gaskets satisfies both requirements simultaneously. The enclosure material, gasket chemistry, and sealing construction are all confirmed against the combined environment specification at DFM review stage. Submit your site chemical exposure data alongside the IP69K requirement and the correct specification is confirmed in writing before fabrication is committed. 

Our VFD enclosure runs too hot in the field. Can Frigate redesign the thermal provisions?

Submit your drive’s heat dissipation specification and the current enclosure drawing. Frigate’s review will assess whether the thermal provisions — heatsink profile, fan frame, back-panel interface, or climate control mounting — are adequately sized against your drive’s actual heat load and will recommend modifications. Thermal provision redesign is assessed as a DFM review at the drawing submission stage before any fabrication is committed.

We need ISO 12944 C5 compliance documentation for our project submission. What does Frigate provide?

Frigate supplies DFT measurement records per coat, coating system specification sheet identifying primer and topcoat products, salt spray test results where applicable, and a Certificate of Conformance confirming the coating system meets ISO 12944 C5 requirements. This documentation is compiled per shipment and formatted for direct submission to your project verification requirement.

We're not sure whether 304 or 316L stainless is required for our installation. Can Frigate advise?

Yes, provide your site environment data including the chemicals present, ambient humidity, proximity to coastline, and washdown regime. Frigate’s engineering team will return a written material recommendation with the technical justification within 3 working days. If the environment is borderline between 304 and 316L, the recommendation will state which factors drive the decision so your engineering team can make an informed sign-off.

Our installation site classification is Zone 2, does that change the enclosure construction requirements compared to Zone 1?

Zone 2 permits Ex e (increased safety) and Ex n (non-sparking) construction, which imposes different requirements from the Ex d (flameproof) construction required for Zone 1, specifically around IP rating minimums, cable entry device selection, and internal component clearance distances rather than flame path geometry. The enclosure construction appropriate for your zone classification is confirmed at the environment review stage against your area classification document and the specific equipment to be housed. Submit your zone classification, gas group, and temperature class alongside the enclosure specification and Frigate’s engineering team will confirm the correct construction requirements before fabrication is committed.
