Enclosure materials like aluminum or high-conductivity plastics are critical in dissipating heat generated by high-power electronics. Aluminum offers superior heat dissipation due to its high thermal conductivity, while thermally conductive plastics can be used for lightweight applications, but they have lower heat dissipation capabilities. Proper material selection ensures efficient cooling and prevents overheating, which can cause component failure.
Multi-piece enclosures require precise assembly to ensure effective EMI shielding. If the joints and seams are not perfectly sealed, they can create gaps, leading to electromagnetic interference (EMI) leakage. Conductive gaskets and overlapping seams are often used to maintain continuous shielding. Sensitivity components may experience signal degradation without proper EMI management, affecting performance.
Enclosures in outdoor or high-altitude environments often have pressure relief valves or breathable membranes to equalize internal pressure. These features prevent internal condensation, reduce the risk of seal deformation, and protect against rapid pressure fluctuations. This ensures the electronics remain protected even when moving between different atmospheric pressures.
Gasket compression set refers to the ability of a gasket to maintain its sealing properties after being compressed over time. High-quality materials, such as silicone or EPDM, are designed with low compression set values (under 10%), meaning they retain their sealing force even after repeated compression cycles. This ensures that seals perform effectively in dynamic or high-vibration environments.
Enclosures designed for corrosive environments, like marine or chemical industries, are made from corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel or special coatings such as powder coating or anodizing. Seals and fasteners are also selected for their resistance to saltwater and chemicals. These materials ensure that enclosures maintain their integrity and prevent ingress of water, dust, or harmful agents, even under extreme conditions.
