Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter

Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter is machined with tightly controlled internal and external thread geometries, conforming to MIL-STD-3011 and STANAG interface standards. Thread pitch diameter, major/minor tolerances, and flank angles are verified using Class 3B/3A thread gauges and CMM scanning to ensure zero thread runout. This prevents thread galling, incomplete mating, and rotational misalignment during fuze installation under field conditions.

Product Description

Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter is designed to withstand high axial and torsional loads generated during barrel acceleration and setback shock. Material selection includes 4340 steel or 7075-T6 aluminum, heat-treated to specific Rockwell hardness bands. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) confirms that each adapter maintains elastic deformation below critical yield thresholds during launch profiles exceeding 10,000g, preserving interface integrity between shell body and fuze.

Tolerance Levels

IT6 for fuze interface, IT7 for body (ISO 286)

Certification Standard

MIL-STD-1316 (fuze safety), AQAP 2110, ITAR controlled

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

100% Radiographic (ASTM E94), 100% MPI (ASTM E1444)

Thread Specifications

UNEF 28-2A (external), Class 3A fit (per ASME B1.1)

Explosive Atmosphere Compatibility

Non-sparking finish, ESD <10^6 ohms (per MIL-STD-1686)

Technical Advantages

Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter maintains axial and radial concentricity between the booster cavity and the fuze port to within 25 microns. This precision ensures unbroken alignment of the explosive train, eliminating offset detonation and misfire risks. Bore centerlines are verified with spindle runout probes and matched to projectile and fuze bore profiles to control cumulative manufacturing error.

Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter is surface-finished using conversion coatings such as zinc-nickel, manganese phosphate, or MIL-A-8625 Type III anodizing, selected based on galvanic compatibility with adjoining components. Surface treatments are tested to resist corrosion under MIL-STD-810 salt fog cycles and maintain dimensional stability when in contact with PBXN, HMX, and Composition B-class energetic compounds.

Industry Applications

Conventional Artillery Rounds

Provides mechanical interface for mating point-detonating or time-delay fuzes in 105mm, 122mm, and 155mm high-explosive projectile assemblies.

Precision-Guided Munitions (PGMs)

Enables secure attachment of electronic or GPS-guided fuzes requiring tight concentricity and EMI shielding for targeting accuracy under dynamic loads.

Cargo and Submunition Shells

Maintains pressure containment and fuze positioning for artillery rounds carrying bomblets, ensuring safe separation timing and uniform submunition deployment.

Base Bleed and ERFB Projectiles

Adapts fuzes to extended-range projectiles with base-bleed systems, preserving aerodynamic balance and internal pressure sealing across all interfaces.

Illumination and Smoke Rounds

Supports time-delay fuzes in pyrotechnic payload shells, ensuring correct ignition delay and ejection sequence under variable launch conditions.

Training and Inert Munitions

Facilitates interface with inert fuzes for ballistic match rounds used in training scenarios or live-fire system calibration without explosive payloads.

Thermal and Pressure Gradient Resistance

Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter is validated for thermal stability across −54°C to +71°C operational ranges and transient heating during rapid firing sequences. Wall thickness and internal profile transitions are optimized to resist localized thermal expansion that could affect the fuze seal integrity. Gas port leakage and thermal fatigue are addressed through stress-relieved machining and post-fabrication NDT.

Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter supports interface configurations for both NATO-standard fuzes and legacy platforms. Adapter profiles are produced with swappable thread forms (UNF, metric, trapezoidal) and multiple step-down diameters, enabling backward compatibility without reworking munitions inventory. Custom drawings based on reverse-engineered shell lots are accepted with digital scanning integration for fitment assurance.

Having Doubts? Our FAQ

Check all our Frequently Asked Question

How does Frigate ensure the thread profiles on Artillery Shell Fuze Adapters meet NATO and MIL-spec standards?

Frigate machines threads using CNC systems programmed with verified MIL-STD and STANAG thread geometries. Each adapter is inspected using certified GO/NO-GO gauges and 3D thread scanning. We maintain flank angle, pitch diameter, and lead within tight limits to prevent mating issues. This guarantees compatibility with both legacy and modern fuze types across platforms.

What testing does Frigate perform to validate the structural strength of the Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter?

Frigate uses FEA simulations and physical pull/load testing to assess axial and torsional strength of the adapter. Materials are certified for yield strength and impact resistance after heat treatment. We test under simulated launch loads exceeding 10,000g to ensure no deformation. All test data is documented and traceable to lot-level production.

How does Frigate control dimensional stability of the Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter under thermal cycling?

Frigate selects alloys with low thermal expansion coefficients and applies post-machining stress relief. We validate thermal dimensional shift using environmental chambers with −54°C to +71°C cycles. Adapter dimensions are re-verified after cycling to check for permanent distortion. This ensures fit and seal performance under extreme field temperatures.

How does Frigate handle adapter compatibility for artillery shells from different manufacturers?

Frigate uses reverse engineering with 3D scanning and CMM to map existing shell interfaces. We create custom adapter geometries while matching critical interface points. Our design process includes tolerance mapping to eliminate mismatch during fuze installation. This approach supports integration across multinational shell and fuze inventories.

What corrosion resistance features are applied by Frigate on the Artillery Shell Fuze Adapter?

Frigate applies surface treatments like zinc-nickel, phosphate, or MIL-A-8625 anodizing depending on alloy type. Coatings are tested for corrosion resistance under MIL-STD-810 salt spray conditions. We also consider galvanic pairing with fuze and shell materials to avoid electrochemical degradation. This protects structural integrity during long-term storage and transport.
