Socket Weld Flanges

Pipe misalignment, welding fatigue, or sealing failures can delay line commissioning in compact piping layouts. Our Socket Weld Flanges (SW Flange) avoids such issues by allowing fast alignment and easy welding with reduced weld volume.

Standard Specification

ASME B16.5, ASME B16.11, MSS SP-44, EN 1092-1, DIN 2633

Pressure Rating

Class 3000, 6000 (PN40 to PN100) [Limited to smaller sizes due to socket weld design]

Material

Class 3000, 6000 (PN40 to PN100) [Limited to smaller sizes due to socket weld design]

Nominal Size

½” to 4″ (DN15 to DN100) [Max 2″ for high-pressure applications]

Flange Type

Socket Weld (SW) – Pipe inserts into flange socket and is fillet-weld secured

Product Description

Small pipe sizes often create challenges during flange placement and sealing. This design simplifies installation while keeping pipe bore continuity and holding pressure at Class 3000 or 6000 ratings.

Facing Type

Raised Face (RF), Flat Face (FF)

Dimensions

Customizable (Socket Depth, Bore Size) [Per ASME B16.11]

Bolt Circle Diameter

ASME B16.5: Standardized per class/size; EN 1092-1: Metric series

Number & Size of Bolt Holes

4 to 8 holes (½” to ¾” bolts) [Limited due to small size range]

Surface Finish

Smooth machined (125–250 RA), Electro-polished (for sanitary applications)

Corrosion Resistance

SS316/L: High resistance; Carbon Steel: Galvanized/Epoxy-coated

Temperature Rating

-29°C to +400°C [Lower than WN flanges due to stress concentration at weld]

Material Certification

MTR, EN 10204 3.1, NACE MR0175 (for sour service)

Gasket Compatibility

Flat ring gaskets (non-metallic), Spiral-wound (limited to Class 3000)

Coating/Plating

Electroless Nickel, Xylan, PTFE (for chemical resistance)

Manufacturing Method

Forged (ASTM A105/A182), Precision machined (for tight tolerances)

Technical Advantages

Socket welds reduce welding time while giving stronger joint stability than slip-on types. We follow ASME B16.11 for socket depth, weld gap, and bore tolerance to avoid flow restriction.
Raised face and flat face options help match varied gasket standards in chemical and gas units. All machined surfaces maintain 125–250 RA finish, and electropolished SS options suit sanitary needs.

Industry Applications

Chemical Injection Skids

Fits small-bore lines where leak-free seals and quick welding are needed in confined spaces.

Compact Heat Exchangers

Helps connect low-flow circuits where full-penetration welding is not feasible.

Steam Header Assemblies

Delivers tight joints on small lines under temperature swings in utility stations.

Offshore Module Packages

Suitable for high-pressure systems with strict space and weight constraints.

Process Gas Panels

Works in instrument tap-offs requiring exact bore matching and Class 6000 rating.

OEM Pressure Systems

Used in compact builds that demand clean welds and easy repeat assembly in low-clearance zones.

Custom-Fit SW Flanges for Small Pipe Systems

Every high-pressure small-bore system needs flanges that avoid over-welding and seal under thermal cycling. We manufacture SW flanges from forged ASTM A105, A182, or A694 stock with class ratings up to 6000.
Clients can request electroplated or Xylan-coated finishes for corrosion zones or sour service. Socket depth, bore, and bolt circle are customizable based on your pipe and flange configuration.

Having Doubts? Our FAQ

Check all our Frequently Asked Question

Why are socket weld flanges limited to small pipe sizes?

Socket weld flanges rely on internal sockets for pipe insertion, which becomes unreliable beyond 4-inch diameter. Larger sizes increase weld stress and risk of incomplete fusion. For pipes above this range, weld neck or slip-on flanges are preferred.

Can I use socket weld flanges in sour service pipelines?

Yes, but only when using certified materials like ASTM A182 F316 or A694 F52 with NACE MR0175 compliance. We also offer Xylan or PTFE coatings to improve chemical resistance. Always verify material traceability with MTR and EN 10204 3.1 certification before final selection.

Are spiral-wound gaskets suitable for socket weld flanges?

Spiral-wound gaskets can be used but only in Class 3000 applications with raised face ends. Socket weld design offers limited gasket surface area compared to weld neck types. Non-metallic flat gaskets are often the safer and more reliable choice.

Do socket weld flanges require precise pipe end preparation?

Yes, the pipe must have a square-cut end with deburred edges for correct socket insertion. An expansion gap must also be maintained during welding to prevent thermal cracking. We follow ASME B16.11 weld gap rules to avoid distortion.

How do I confirm the flange fits my bolt pattern and bore size?

We follow ASME B16.5 and EN 1092-1 bolt circle rules by flange class and size. Bore and socket dimensions follow ASME B16.11 and can be customized if requested. We recommend sharing your piping isometric or layout file for accurate fitment.
