Having Doubts? Our FAQ

Check all our Frequently Asked Question

What is the role of insulation in electric cables?

Insulation in electric cables is a material layer covering the conductive wires. Its job is to prevent the electricity from escaping the wire and protect people or equipment from electric shocks. The insulation protects the cable from heat, moisture, and chemical damage. Different cables use different insulation materials, depending on where and how they are used.

Why do some cables have a shield layer?

A shield layer in electric cables helps block electromagnetic interference (EMI). This interference can cause signals to weaken or become distorted, especially in sensitive electronics or communication systems. The shield, usually made of braided copper or aluminum, acts as a barrier that keeps external electrical noise out and prevents the cable from creating interference with nearby cables.

How does cable diameter affect current capacity?

The diameter of the conductive wire inside a cable, often called the cable’s gauge, directly affects its current-carrying capacity (ampacity). A thicker cable can carry more current because it has less electrical resistance. Higher resistance in thinner cables causes more heat, which can lead to overheating and damage. For high-power applications, cables with larger diameters are necessary to handle the load safely.

What is the purpose of a stranded conductor in cables?

Stranded conductors consist of many small wires twisted together to form one conductor. This design makes the cable more flexible than solid conductors, just one solid piece of metal. Stranded conductors are used in applications where the cable needs to bend or move, like in power tools, robotics, or vehicles. They also help reduce resistance to high-frequency signals.

Why are fire-resistant cables used in certain environments?

Fire-resistant cables are designed to function during a fire, even when exposed to high temperatures. These cables are coated with special materials that withstand extreme heat and won’t melt or burn easily. They are critical in emergency systems like alarms, fire pumps, and evacuation lighting, where maintaining power during a fire can save lives and prevent property damage.
