Type M Power Cords

Type M Power Cords are designed for sustained operation at 15A and 250V AC without exceeding thermal thresholds under resistive or inductive loads. The plug incorporates low-resistance brass conductors (<20 ) and thermoset polymer housing rated for 125°C continuous use, minimizing thermal rise during long-duration current flow. These cords are suitable for applications requiring stable power delivery under ambient temperatures ranging from -25°C to +125°C.

Technical Advantages

Each Type M Power Cord is subjected to dielectric testing at 2.5kV AC for 1 minute with insulation resistance exceeding 100 MΩ at 500V DC. These metrics ensure adequate separation in high-transient or surge-prone environments. Conductor insulation follows IEC 60227 or IEC 60245 standards with options for thermoplastic or elastomeric sheathing.

Outer jackets of Type M Power Cords are constructed using oil-resistant, UV-stabilized chloroprene or PVC compounds compliant with IEC 60529 for ingress protection up to IP67. These cords maintain mechanical integrity under high humidity, surface abrasion, and exposure to hydrocarbons, making them appropriate for outdoor and industrial-grade installations.

Type M Power Cords

Conductor Sizing and Electrical Efficiency

Type M Power Cords are assembled using Class 5 fine-stranded tinned copper conductors up to 3×2.5 mm², achieving >97% IACS conductivity. This reduces line losses across extended cable runs while maintaining ampacity ratings within the limits defined by IEC 60364. Conductor stranding enhances flexibility for routing in confined cable management systems.

Plug pins of Type M Power Cords follow dimensional and positional tolerances within ±0.05 mm as per SANS 164-1, ensuring reliable contact pressure and socket retention. Ground pin orientation and socket depth support secure insertion and low arcing during connection or disconnection under load. Contact surfaces are nickel- or tin-plated for corrosion resistance.

Check all our Frequently Asked Question

How does Frigate ensure consistent plug-socket fit in Type M Power Cords?

Frigate manufactures Type M Power Cords with plug pin tolerances maintained within ±0.05 mm, ensuring exact alignment with SANS 164-1 sockets. Pin and sleeve dimensions are verified using optical comparators and precision gauges. This reduces arcing and insertion force variability during repetitive use. Consistency in mechanical fit improves long-term electrical contact stability.

What quality tests does Frigate conduct on Type M Power Cord insulation systems?

Frigate performs high-voltage dielectric strength tests up to 2.5kV AC and insulation resistance testing at 500V DC per IEC 60227. Each batch is subjected to thermal aging cycles and cold bend tests between -25°C and +125°C. The insulation undergoes volume resistivity and elongation checks. These tests ensure safe operation under thermal and electrical stress.

How are Frigate's Type M Power Cords protected against conductor fatigue in dynamic applications?

Frigate uses Class 5 fine-stranded copper to enhance flex life and reduce micro-cracking under repeated bending. Cord sets are tested to withstand over 1 million flexing cycles using dynamic cable flex machines. Additional strain reliefs are overmolded at both ends for mechanical decoupling. This construction supports use in mobile or vibration-prone systems.

How does Frigate address chemical resistance in Type M Power Cord jackets?

Frigate offers Type M Power Cords with outer jackets made from chloroprene rubber or oil-resistant PVC compounds. These materials resist degradation from lubricants, fuels, and industrial solvents. Each jacket formulation is tested against ISO 1817 chemical exposure protocols. This makes the cords suitable for automotive workshops, machine shops, and chemical plants.

Are Frigate's Type M Power Cords suitable for EMC-sensitive environments?

Frigate supplies shielded variants of Type M Power Cords upon request, incorporating braided copper screens or aluminum foil wraps. Shielding effectiveness is tested to reduce radiated emissions in accordance with CISPR 11 Class A. Ground continuity is ensured by low-impedance bonding between shield and ground pin. This configuration supports operation in EMI-sensitive installations.
